I had the pleasure of visiting one of the unyoked cabins for a weekend away recently. It was meant to be a surprise weekend away for my husband but note to self…when husband says he will put leave in 6 months earlier don’t trust him. A family weekend away turned into a solo trip with my 1 year old! He will never live that mistake down now that it’s documented in print!
We had the pleasure of going to Marama, one of the 3 unyoked cabins overlooking Raglan. A quick 50min drive from Hamilton and 15min from Raglan it was the perfect getaway with a little one.
Getting off the grid started with a short hike into the cabin from the car park. We had some wheelbarrows to transport our gear. It was a bit harder than advertised with one person while front packing my toddler, but it was worth it!
The cabin was kitted out with a radio, heating, gas stove and a double bed. I was thrilled to see Raglan roast provided the coffee beans. If you wanted a little tipple there are even a stock in the fridge you can pay for once you leave the accommodation. And, if you feel like cooking over the campfire or even just roasting marshmallows there is all the set up for it.
The Unyoked philosophy is to slow down, remove yourself from the hustle and bustle of normal life and become present in the moment. Even with a young child in tow, I was able to get out in nature and slow down. While he stomped around on the grass and tried to eat dirt, I grinded my coffee beans while looking at the view (and my 3rd eye on him of course!).
I would highly recommend the unyoked experience. Compared to similar concepts it is well priced, especially with the STONZ discount. They currently only have cabins in the North Island but are hoping to expand into the South Island soon.
