You know our Executive Team, but do you know who’s behind the phone/email when you contact our support team? For each of our newsletters going forward we’re going to introduce a different member of the team.
Kate – Executive Director
Hi, I’m Kate and I’ve been with STONZ for almost three years now. When Heath Lash first spoke to me about working for STONZ, there were about 600 members and to be honest I wasn’t sure about working for a union as I hadn’t had the best experiences in the past. But my arm was twisted and it’s amazing to see how far the union has come in such a short time, I enjoy the fresh approach, and it’s been an awesome opportunity to be part of helping to grow and support the team to get to where we are today.
I’m based in Christchurch, although I have to admit I was previously an Aucklander (both are great places to live). However, what I love about Canterbury is that we actually have seasons here as opposed to Auckland where you could have everything thrown at you in one day! It’s also a great place to go adventuring from, with the outdoors right on our doorstep. And even though its actually freezing at the moment, there is nothing like heading out for a walk with the snowy mountains in the distance.
Outside of work I have my two dogs that require constant walking, I have recently got back into horse riding and have also started to teach myself to knit which I’m finding helps to wind down at the end of the day. I’m never going to be a master, but my first attempt at a scarf is going ok so far…
There is a Māori proverb that you’ve probably heard before which resonates with me, He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata he tangata he tangata (What is the most important thing in the world? It is people it is people it is people!). One of the main things that gets me out of bed each day is to make sure we’re doing everything we can as a union to support and advocate for our members, and junior doctors across Aotearoa. So that you in turn can do what you do best, looking after our communities and keeping our people safe.
Members – do you have a story you’d like to share? Or you think would inspire other RMOs? If so, email support@stonz.co.nz We’d love to hear from you.
